Tallmadge Middle School Launches Student Mentorship Program
TALLMADGE, OHIO (Nov. 16, 2017) – Tallmadge Middle School recently launched a student mentorship program for sixth through eighth-grade students. The mentorship program pairs students in need of academic or social guidance with eighth-grade student mentors.

The program, named Best Lil’ Teachers (BLT) by the students, was developed by eighth-grade math and science teacher Audrey Cunert.

“I proposed the idea for this program because I saw a real need for mentoring and tutoring among our students,” said Cunert. “We have so many outstanding leaders among our eighth-graders, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to allow the students to work together to learn from one another.”

The BLT sessions are held every Thursday from 2:30 – 3:30 p.m. Students are paired with mentors based on their preference and needs.

There are currently 19 mentors in the program. The student mentors meet once a week to plan everything from the activities to the snack for the session. The mentors have worked with local businesses to donate supplies and food each week.

“It has been so rewarding to see our student mentors taking ownership of this program,” said Cunert. “Not only are the mentees learning and developing new skills, but our mentors are fostering organizational and leadership skills. The students have exceeded my expectations during every session.”

“It has been amazing to see the growth of the BLT program in such a short amount of time,” said Superintendent Jeff Ferguson. “I am proud of all students involved with the program. From mentors to mentees, these students have shown drive and initiative in bettering themselves academically, socially and as leaders among their peers.”
