Tallmadge City School District to Hold Community Meeting

TALLMADGE, OHIO, (November 30, 2018): The Tallmadge City School District will hold a community meeting on Monday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m. at Tallmadge High School. The goal of the meeting is to generate feedback on how the district should move forward following the failure of the 7.4 mill operating levy on Nov. 6.

“I would like to thank everyone who supported us on Election Day,” said Superintendent Jeff Ferguson. “Unfortunately, this is not the outcome we had hoped for; however, the need for additional funding for our district is still there. It is now even more urgent. We must move forward. Before making a final decision on next steps, we want to hear from our parents and community members.”

Without the passage of new operating dollars in 2019, the district faces drastic cuts to programming and staff stemming from the loss of $2.5 million in state funding through the phase out of the Tangible Personal Property tax.

“The Tallmadge City School District is committed to fiscal responsibility,” Ferguson said. “We were able to stretch the last operating levy nine years. If not for the loss in state funding, we would have been able to stretch it even further.”

In addition to the community meeting, the district will also be launching a phone poll and an online survey to gather additional feedback.

In order to go back on the ballot in May, the Board of Education must pass two resolutions in January ahead of the February filing deadline. To meet this timeline, the district needs to gather and analyze community feedback during the month of December.

“It is important that we generate a solution that our community will support while meeting the needs of the district,” Ferguson said. “I encourage everyone to participate. We want to maintain the excellent educational system our students deserve and our residents expect while keeping Tallmadge a community of choice for families moving to the area.”
